  • Tottenham has been linked to Wolfsburg star Wout Weghorst
  • Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schafer is convinced Spurs don't need Weghorst
  • Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane combined for five goals in Spurs' recent win against Southampton

Following Tottenham Hotspur’s stunning 5-2 victory over Southampton, Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schafer said he doesn't think Jose Mourinho’s side needs to pursue his prolific striker, Wout Weghorst.

In a recent talk with German sports news outlet Sport1, Wolfsburg’s sporting director addressed the rumors linking Weghorst to Tottenham, revealing that they have yet to receive an offer from Spurs or any other club.

“Wout Weghorst has been speculating in the media for weeks, months. Nobody has contacted us yet,” Schafer said.

Son Heung-min and Harry Kane put on a show in Tottenham’s win over Premier League rival Southampton Sunday, combining for five sensational goals. This has convinced Schafer that Spurs do not need to add another striker to the team.

Instead, the Wolfsburg chief advised the club to figure out how to wisely manage its attacking department, which is stacked with talented goal scorers.

“If you look at the last Tottenham game in the Premier League you can see that they have fewer problems on the attack,” he added. “Now they also signed Gareth Bale. There is more of a problem over who is allowed to play. They don’t need Wout [Weghorst].”

Mourinho made it clear earlier this month that he plans to bring in a new striker, Sky Sports reported. While Kane is still the club’s primary goal threat, the renowned manager is keen on pairing him with a credible attacking back-up.

An array of notable strikers has been linked to a move to Tottenham this transfer window, including Weghorst, the fourth-best goal scorer in the 2019-20 Bundesliga season. Reports earlier said that the Spurs have been keeping an eye on the situation of Weghorst, who scored 33 goals in 67 Bundesliga games for Wolfsburg in the past two years.

As for Weghorst, he could find his way to the Premier League in the future. Despite having had an illustrious career in the German top flight, the Premier League, specifically Liverpool, remains a dream of his.

"I've dreamt of [playing for Liverpool] since childhood," Weghorst told De Telegraaf in 2018. "If I continue to train with full commitment, I think that opportunity will come."

"Of course, something like that depends on several factors," the Wolfsburg star added. "You have to stay fit and a coach and club must see it in you, but apart from that you can create many things in life for yourself."
