  • Manchester United and Real Madrid come to terms for Raphael Varane
  • The transfer is a done deal, pending Varane's medicals
  • Real Madrid sells Varane as the club continues its pursuit of Kylian Mbappe

Manchester United’s shot at an English Premier League title is well within its sights as the club has agreed to terms with Real Madrid for world-class defender Raphael Varane.

Reports indicate that the two giants of their respective leagues have agreed to a £41 million ($57 million) transfer bid, which will be fully consummated once Varane completes his medical within the week.

Transfer wizard Fabrizio Romano confirmed as much in a tweet that the signing of Varane is “100% done” and that he will be flying to Manchester this week.

Romano further expounded that Varane will be receiving a four-year contract, with options to extend until June 2026.

This is a great signing for Manchester United as the club’s lack of a solid defender at right center-back was exposed in their loss to the Queens Park Rangers in a pre-season friendly.

Varane boasts an impressive profile that features over 300 appearances with Real Madrid that ended with Los Blancos winning three La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies.

He’s a defender who relies heavily on his knowledge of the game rather than pure athleticism, which when put together makes him such a dangerous force in the backfield for any opponent.

It was reported yesterday that a deal for the center-back was expected to be completed by the end of the week, but with Manchester United’s plans of hoisting the league trophy this season and Real Madrid’s continued pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, both sides moved quickly.

For the fans at Old Trafford, this could very well be dubbed as the “Summer of United” as the club has made strides in improving their team’s chances at a league title.

The Red Devils have five more weeks to address potential problems within the roster.

The Paul Pogba situation is expected to go in PSG’s favor as he has not signed an extension with Manchester United yet despite the club’s best efforts to sign him.

They are also keen on signing Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid as a right-back and it’s well within reason to believe that they are on the market for a replacement for Pogba, with West Ham United’s Declan Rice still on the table despite growing interest from Chelsea.
