KEY POINTS

  • N'Golo Kante remains a vital piece for Chelsea despite his injury problems
  • Kante has at least three clubs interested in his services
  • Former Chelsea captain Dennis Wise says it would be a big mistake to let Kante go

N'Golo Kante has hardly made his presence felt this season due to injuries and some other reason. That alone is seen as frustrating and there are suggestions Chelsea may give up on the World Cup winner. However, such a move would be a foolish one according to former Blues captain Dennis Wise.

Fitness issues have held off Kante from performing regularly for the Blues. He has appeared in only 27 games this season, raising questions on how long Frank Lampard can find alternatives each time he is out. Critics do not discount the possibility of the Blues listening to offers for the French national. There are at least two clubs interested in the 29-year-old midfielder. They are Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Inter Milan has also entertained the idea of getting Kante to their side. Being often injured, Antonio Conte is reportedly interested in getting the midfielder, Gazzetta Dello Sport reported. Both worked together when Conte was still with Chelsea. That included winning a Premier League title during the 2016-17 season.

So far, nothing has gone beyond potential interest in Kante. No club has approached the Blues about a potential deal, likely wary of the fitness of the French player. However, anything can happen moving forward. And if the price is right, there is the possibility that the Blues could consider it.

For now, Chelsea has not shown any plans of dealing away Kante. And according to former Blues captain Dennis Wise, it would be best to keep it that way. For Wise, Kante remains a vital cog for the Blues' plans. Letting him walk would be a big mistake.

For now, Kante remains out of action. He has been ruled out in Chelsea's clash with Liverpool on account of a nagging hamstring injury. He has missed the club's four matches.

His absence will deal a big blow for the Blues who need all the help they can get against the Reds. With the French national out, it will be up to Jorginho to hold up the midfield and protect the back-four.

"It changes the face of it. They have had an incredible campaign, there can be a small dip," Lampard said. "They were virtually unbeatable, but I only consider the best Liverpool."
