Manchester United and Chelsea are in danger of being usurped by Bayern Munich--with reports claiming that the German side has already engaged in deep negotiations to sign sought-after defender Dayot Upamecano.

The 22-year-old has emerged as one of Europe’s top center-backs and has attracted the attention of top clubs from across the continent.

Upamecano was linked with a move away from Germany last summer but chose to remain with Red Bull Leipzig while also signing a new long-term deal.

However, he is said to have a £40 million ($54.2 million) release clause in his contract, which all interested clubs are willing to pay.

Bayern Munich has earmarked Upamecano as the perfect replacement for David Alaba, who chose to sever his ties with the club at the end of the season. The top-seeded Bundesliga squad has reportedly sat down with top officials of Leipzig.

Spanish publication Marca first reported the German club’s pursuit of Upamecano, and the speculation was reaffirmed by German journalist Alfred Draxler, who revealed that it is almost a done deal.

"I know that Bayern has been in contact with Upamecano's agent and that talks are advanced," Draxler stated.

However, Bayern is not expected to have it easy in its pursuit to land Upamecano with the report claiming that Chelsea and Manchester United are still very much in the race.

Frank Lampard’s Blues are looking for a long-term solution for their backline despite adding Thiago Silva on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

Meanwhile, Manchester United is looking for a starting defender who could help Harry Maguire on the pitch.
