KEY POINTS

  • Manchester City's chances on Caglar Soyuncu are looking good
  • Real Madrid or Barcelona may not be an ideal destination for Soyuncu
  • Soyuncu may take Aymeric Laporte's role if the latter decides to leave

Manchester City is looking to improve its lineup as it prepares for its title defense.

One area where they may need to improve is the defensive side. With the possibility of Aymeric Laporte may be leaving the Etihad Stadium, Caglar Soyuncu of Leicester City could be the ideal replacement.

The only problem seen here is that the Sky Blues are not the only team targeting the Turkish defender.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are also interested in getting the 25-year-old player.

But one advantage that the Citizens may hold over the two clubs is Soyuncu’s preference to stay in the English Premier League.

This would be a big blow to the La Liga giants although the reason behind it is understandable.

Soyuncu has come into his own with the Foxes, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s top defenders.

After joining Leicester City from SC Freiburg in 2018, he has filled in ably since the departure of Harry Maguire who moved to Manchester United.

Moreover, he has become a reliable defender for head coach Brendan Rodgers.

The Turkish player wrapped up his Euro 2020 stint after Turkey was eliminated from the group stages.

But looking ahead, it appears he is more inclined to stick with the Premier League–something that raises the chances of Manchester City on him.

However, it was reported that Leicester City is in no rush to sell the player. He has two years remaining in his current contract.

The Foxes have reportedly set a valuation of £51.63 million ($71 million) for the star center-back.

Pep Guardiola currently has three center-back in the fold in Ruben Dias, John Stones and Aymeric Laporte.

Nathan Ake is also around but has yet to prove himself with the Citizens.

Of those names, Laporte has been mentioned as a target by Barcelona this transfer window.

Should the French defender head to Barca, Soyuncu is seen as the perfect replacement for him.

Although promising, there is no telling if Manchester City would be willing to settle the asking fee of Leicester City.

All that should come into a full circle if Laporte or any of the other center-backs are dealt out this summer.
