Shkodran Mustafi is taking his act to Bundesliga side Schalke 04, becoming the second German defender to leave Arsenal.

The 28-year-old player signed a permanent deal with the Miners, a move after a falling out with Gunners manager Mikel Arteta.

Mustafi inked a six-month contract with the S04. The North London side was keen on dealing away the German who had started in just six games across all competitions this season, ESPN reported.

In addition, Mustafi has yet to play a single minute in the English Premier League.

"We thank Musti for his contribution at Arsenal which has spanned four-and-a-half years, more than 150 appearances and a prominent role in two FA Cup wins. Everyone associated with the club wishes Musti and his family the very best wishes for the next chapter in his career," Arsenal technical director Edu said in an official club statement.

The German center-back joined Arsenal in 2016 from Valencia on a £35 million ($47.9 million) deal. He is expected to fill in the void left by Ozan Kabak who is taking his act to Liverpool.

Despite parting ways with the German, the Gunners coach considered him a key player and thanked him for his professionalism.

"He played a very important part in my first season as manager and I'd like to thank him for his professionalism and for always being ready when called upon. Everybody at Arsenal wishes Musti well at Schalke," Arteta stated.

During his stay at the Emirates Stadium, Mustafi was part of a couple of FA Cup triumphs and also helped the club in the Europa League final in 2019.

Given his credentials, Schalke is confident that Mustafi can fill in the void left by Kabak on Deadline day.

Though it is a loan deal, Liverpool has the option to buy Kabak in the summer if he performs accordingly, Sky Sports reported.

"We are convinced that with Shkodran Mustafi we have been able to sign a very good central defender who will fill the sporting void that Ozan is undoubtedly leaving behind," Jochen Schneider, Schalke's sporting director, said.
