  • A number of "Aquaman" fans and social media users want Emilia Clarke to replace Amber Heard in the "Aquaman" franchise
  • This came after a report claimed Heard will be featured in less than 10 minutes of screen time in the upcoming sequel
  • More than 2.9 million people have signed a petition calling for Heard to lose her role as Mera amid her legal battle with Johnny Depp

"Aquaman" fans are calling for Amber Heard to be recast in the superhero franchise and for Emilia Clarke to replace her as the love interest of Jason Momoa's Aquaman/Arthur Curry.

Heard joined the DC Extended Universe to play Mera in 2017's "Justice League," later reprising the role in "Aquaman" (2018) and "Zack Snyder's Justice League" (2021). She will return as the Atlantean princess in "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," which is due for release in March 2023.

But film journalist Grace Randolph, who is known for comic book movie scoops, recently claimed that Heard will be featured in less than 10 minutes of screen time in the upcoming sequel. International Business Times could not independently verify this information.

It is unclear if Heard's role in the sequel was always intended to be small or if her screen time was reduced in the wake of her legal battle with Johnny Depp, but a number of fans have said that they would prefer to see the actress recast than have Mera's screen time reduced.

Among the names being suggested to take over the role is that of Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen, khaleesi to Momoa's Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo, in "Game of Thrones."

"Can we replace Amber Heard with Emilia Clarke for 'Aquaman 2'?" one person tweeted.

"There's been so much drama with 'Aquaman 2,'" another Twitter user wrote, tagging Clarke. "Will you be willing to play the role of Mera with Jason? Please say yes."

"Jason Momoa and Emilia Clarke starred in 'Game of Thrones'! It would've been awesome to see Jason and Emilia as Aquaman and Mera in the first one!" another supporter wrote.

"I think Emilia Clarke should be Aquaman's Mera. Her dynamic with Jason Momoa could not be more powerful and funny!!" a fourth person claimed.

"Why Emilia Clarke wasn’t chosen to play Mera in 'Aquaman' considering her undeniable acting ability and chemistry with Jason Momoa is beyond me," another wrote.

Claims of Heard's reduced screen time come in the wake of a petition calling for her to be dropped from "Aquaman 2" reaching 2 million signatures.

Depp lost his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise after Heard accused him of domestic abuse, which he has denied.

Now, more than 2.9 million people have signed the petition calling for Heard to lose her role as Mera after Depp claimed that he suffered domestic abuse at the hands of his ex-wife.

Depp has accused Heard of allegedly punching him twice in the face in an April 2016 incident and throwing a vodka bottle at him, severing the tip of one of his fingers, during a separate altercation.

The "Fantastic Beasts" star is currently suing Heard over a 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she wrote about surviving domestic abuse. Depp acknowledged that he wasn't mentioned by name in the op-ed but argued that it was referring to him and their past relationship and that the "fictitious" claims allegedly ruined his career.

"Aquaman 2," which is directed by James Wan, wrapped filming in January. The third installment is yet to be announced.

"Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" will be released on March 17, 2023.
