  • Jason Momoa started following Johnny Depp on Instagram, reports say
  • A fake video of Momoa seemingly reacting to Depp testifying in his trial against Amber Heard went viral
  • Momoa hasn't made any statements confirming his actual stance on the former couple's legal battle

Jason Momoa has sparked rumors that he may have picked a side in the ongoing legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

Eagle-eyed fans recently noticed that Momoa, who worked with Heard on "Aquaman" and is set to star opposite her in the upcoming sequel, started following Depp on Instagram after the trial of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor's defamation case against his ex-wife began in Fairfax County, Virginia, Gamerant reported.

It is unclear when exactly Momoa began following Depp on the social media platform. The "Game of Thrones" star still follows Heard on Instagram as of this writing. The actress had been on his list of followed people before the trial began on April 11, the outlet noted.

A video uploaded by YouTube channel GeoMFilms also recently triggered speculation regarding who Momoa is siding with in Depp and Heard's dispute.

The video, which has received over 1.1 million views on YouTube and has been shared on other social media platforms including Twitter, shows Momoa seemingly reacting to footage of Depp testifying in the trial.

After Depp talked about Heard sending him a photo of their bed with human fecal matter on his side of it, the video showed Momoa allegedly saying, "All right, her name is no longer Amber Heard, it's Amber Turd," before groaning.

"Jason Momoa. You heard him her name is Amber Turd the guilty one," one person tweeted, reacting to GeoMFilms' video. Another wrote, "She's a bad person! I love how Jason Momoa called her Amber Turd."

"When Jason Momoa said, 'her name is no longer Amber Heard, it's Amber Turd,' it made me like him a bajillion times more," a third user wrote.

"The star of the show Jason Momoa probably wouldn't care if she's removed, he's been reacting to TikToks about her and was calling her Amber Turd, and has since followed Johnny on Insta," a fourth netizen commented with a laughing emoji.

However, what the social media users missed was that the clip is fake. The YouTube user who uploaded the video made it clear in the description that they edited it using voice-over and that what viewers heard was not actually the actor's words, even if it sounded like Momoa.

The clip of Momoa was originally from his interview with guest host Anthony Anderson for "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in July 2021.

Momoa hasn't made any statements confirming his actual stance on the former couple's legal battle.

But a number of celebrities have come forward to support Depp since his legal battle with Heard began, including Ireland Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Sia and J.K. Rowling.

Depp is suing Heard for $50 million over a 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she wrote about surviving domestic abuse. He was not named in the piece, but he argued during the trial that it was clearly referring to him and their past relationship.

The actor said Heard's allegedly false claims destroyed his career and ruined his reputation.

Depp and Heard broke up in May 2016, when she sought a domestic violence restraining order against him, accusing him of abusing her. He denied the claims, and the former couple settled their divorce out of court.

Heard, for her part, insisted that she has told the truth and filed a countersuit against Depp seeking $100 million.

Heard is set to return to the big screen as Mera in "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," which hits theaters on March 17, 2023.
