Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey” is scheduled to be released on Oct. 5 and it looks like it will be a while before another title is introduced in the game franchise. Ubisoft has revealed that it has no plans of releasing an “Assassin’s Creed” game in 2019.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed the news during Gamescom 2018 in Cologne, Germany. Guillemot explained that Ubisoft was only able to release “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey” in 2018 because it was being developed simultaneously with 2017’s “Assassin’s Creed Origins.”

“On ‘Assassin’s,' we had a game [in 2017] and we have one this year, but we are not going to have a full-fledged ‘Assassin’s' next year,” Guillemot told GameSpot. “It's just because the team were working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other. But next year you're not going to have a fully fledged one.”

Since Guillemot said that there won’t be a new game in 2019, some might think that Ubisoft is actually planning to release a spin-off or something else next year. Unfortunately, the CEO clarified that this won’t be the case. Ubisoft will simply be concentrating on providing additional content to “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey” in 2019.

“What you'll have is lots of content coming on [Assassin's Creed Odyssey]. The team really want to give, on a regular basis, some new possibilities for play, so when you get [Odyssey] this year, you're going to get in for a couple of years, actually,” Guillemot explained.

Perhaps getting a a year off from making a new “Assassin’s Creed” game might actually be beneficial to Ubisoft and the franchise as a whole. This could give the developer more time to reinvent the series, much like how it did with the release of “Assassin’s Creed Origins” last year. Ubisoft took a break from the franchise after the release of “Assassin’s Creed Syndicate” in 2014, which provided the developer the time to deliver a new and fresh experience in “Origins.”

“[The time] gave the team the possibility to really bring what they wanted to. The community has been responding very well to it and when I see what we are bringing with Odyssey I know that the community that got back in with Origins will be amazed,” Guillemot said.

Taking a break from making an “Assassin’s Creed” game in 2019 could also ensure Ubisoft with a very strong return in 2020 or beyond. If Ubisoft decides to return to the franchise in 2020, the developer could release a new game for a next-generation console, as pointed out by Eurogamer.
