Jaime Lannister and Walder Frey on "Game of Thrones"
Here’s how to drink like a true citizen of Westeros while watching Season 7 of “Game of Thrones.” HBO

With the official premiere of Season 7 just hours (!!!) away, “Game of Thrones” fans only need to know one thing before settling in to revisit Westeros again—just when and how much they should drink during the episode.

Drinking games during shows and movies are popular in general, but are especially appropriate for Thronies. Not only is the show always somehow pulling the rug out from under their feet by what happens, but hey, the characters of Westeros make no secret about their preferences to literally drink nothing but ale and wine pretty much all day long, every single day.

So in order to do Cersei (Lena Headey), Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and other characters proud, here’s the ultimate drinking game to follow for Season 7. Happy drinking!

Take A Sip Of Your Drink When:

  • A woman exposes her bare chest
  • Two characters engage in a sword fight
  • Someone says house words/a catchphrase i.e. “A Lannister Always Pays His Debts,” “The Night is Dark and Full of Terrors,” “Winter Is Coming/Winter is Here.”
  • A new and important character is introduced
  • Tyrion makes a clever wisecrack or comment
  • Varys (Conleth Hill) reveals some key information/brokers an alliance
  • A character pours themselves another glass
  • Two characters engage in incestuous sex--particularly if they’re Cersei Lannister and Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) or Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

Take A Shot When:

  • A minor character dies

Take 2 Sips Of Your Drink When:

  • Bran (Isaac Hampstead-Wright) Wargs into someone or something
  • Lyanna Stark’s (Aisling Franciosi) name is mentioned.
  • Sam (John Bradley) takes Gilly (Hannah Murray) and Little Sam somewhere else women and children aren’t allowed
  • Littlefinger (Aiden Gillen) schemes to make things go his way
  • A White Walker shows up on screen
  • A Direwolf is seen
  • One of Dany’s dragons kills someone
  • A random battle occurs
  • Sansa (Sophie Turner) gets married off again
  • Tyrion finally finishes his “I once brought a honeycomb and a jacka** into a brothel” joke

Take Three Sips Of Your Drink When:

  • Dany climbs up on Drogon and goes for a ride
  • A previously dead character comes back to life
  • Core characters are reunited
  • Cersei gets revenge on someone

Chug, Chug, Chug When:

  • The Night King arrives in Westeros
  • Gendry (Joe Dempsie) is finally found
  • You can’t name all the significant characters on-screen within 10 seconds
  • Jon learns the truth about his identity
  • Clegane Bowl happens
  • The Wall falls
  • A Main Character dies

To properly play this drinking game, it’s recommended that you keep true to the forms of refreshment the characters themselves use, so beer and wine are preferable (though you can switch to hard alcohol for a shot). In addition, in order to make sure that you and all of your friends who are watching stay honorable (since honor is so important in Westeros), it’s best to watch together as well.

“Game of Thrones” Season 7 premieres Sunday, July 16 at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO. The series will remain in that timeslot throughout the season.
