Danny Welbeck scored twice and Alexis Sanchez added another as Arsenal established a 3-0 half-time lead over Galatasaray in their Champions League group stage clash at the Emirates. After his transfer from Manchester United in the summer, Welbeck has been under scrutiny for some glaring missed chances, including in a 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund two weeks ago, but against the Turkish giants he pounced twice in eight minutes to get his first Champions League goals for his new club.

The first goal came 22 minutes in courtesy of fine work from another summer signing, Sanchez. The Chilean cut inside from the left before playing a pass beyond a flat-footed Felipe Melo for the pace of Welbeck to run onto. The England international looked like his hesitation may have cost him, but he stretched to poke the ball past goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Soon Arsenal’s lead and his personal tally were doubled. Again Melo was exposed, this time as a header in midfield allowed Welbeck to race beyond the Brazilian makeshift center-back and finish coolly. Despite Arsenal being without a host of players due to injury they continued to make light work of the visitors four minutes before the interval. This time it was Sanchez who latched onto a pass from Mesut Ozil and had ample time to line up a shot into the corner of the net.
