No one is safe in “Vikings,” especially in Season 5. Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) suffered another blow thanks to the death featured in the latest episode. The character is essentially a dead woman walking now, but there is compelling reason for the producers to keep the former queen of Kattegat alive.

The following article contains spoilers from episodes of “Vikings” Season 5 that have already aired.

Bishop Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is dead, and Lagertha is nowhere to be found. For a moment, it did seem like she died in the battle, but since her body wasn’t found, there is a very good chance that she’s still alive.

In a recent interview with Variety, Meyers and executive producer Michael Hirst teased that the upcoming episodes will explore how Lagertha will be impacted by the death of the warrior priest, another clue that she is still out there somewhere.

Lagertha has suffered a lot over the years, but Hirst said in the interview that he has yet to see a place where she “bottoms out.” By the end of Season 5, episode 15, she was hurt both physically as well as mentally. The producer explained that it is now about whether she will be able to cope with all this pain.

Although it seems to be the end of the road for Lagertha, there is still a lot of hope. Hirst pointed out that it is common to talk about strong men, but in “Vikings,” the person to talk about when it comes to strength is Lagertha.

Lagertha being a strong woman is just one of the reasons why she may live for a long time on the show. Hirst said that he is aware of the huge fan following of the character on social media who don’t want her to die. The producer is also proud of Lagertha and is more than happy to talk about how she is a survivor, even in the most challenging situations. However, he did not confirm that she will live a long time and teased that she is in a bad place on the show.

A report by Forbes noted that Lagertha hadn’t been taken prisoner after the battle. There were a few prisoners that were shown in Season 5, episode 15, but the former queen was not among them. TV Guide suggested that she may have left Wessex. The next episode should answer all the questions about the character.

“Vikings” Season 5 airs on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST on the History Channel.
