KEY POINTS

  • Four Walmart stores across three states are set to close by March 10
  • A Walmart Pickup prototype in Chicago is set to close by Feb. 17
  • Shoppers said the store closures would force them to travel farther and incur more expenses

Five Walmart stores in three states are slated to close in the coming weeks due to "underperformance."

In Albuquerque, New Mexico, a Walmart store in the southeast part of the city will be closing by March 10.

According to the company, the store in San Mateo was "underperforming," adding that Walmart's decision to close it was based on several factors, such as historical and current financial performance, The Hill reported, citing a report from KRQE.

For the employees of the closing store, Walmart said they are eligible to transfer to work at another store.

Albuquerque City Councilor Pat Davis said that the closing of the Walmart store "takes away [their] last option for fresh food and grocery stores" along the stretch of East Central, according to Best Life.

Walmart is operating 15 other stores in the Albuquerque metro area.

The company is also preparing to shut down its Silver Spring Drive store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on March 10.

A Milwaukee official criticized Walmart's decision, explaining that it would negatively impact the shoppers and store workers.

Milwaukee Alderman Mark Chambers Jr. told WISN that he has begun coordinating with the Department of City Development to look for other businesses that could replace the Walmart store.

Frequent shoppers were also disappointed after learning about the impending shutdown of the local Walmart store. They say they may have to travel farther to buy groceries, which could mean more expenses.

Walmart is operating 99 other stores in entire Wisconsin.

According to the company, three other Walmart stores are also set to close in the Chicago suburbs.

WGN reported that a Walmart Pickup store in Lincolnwood will shut down by Feb. 17, while two Walmart stores in Homewood and Plainfield will close by March 10.

Like other Walmart stores, the company explained that its stores in Chicago failed to meet its financial expectations.

"We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Homewood, Lincolnwood, and Plainfield locations," Felicia McCraine, the Walmart director of corporate affairs global communication, said.

"We look forward to serving them at our other stores in the surrounding communities and on walmart.com," she added.

Chicago shoppers also expressed dismay over Walmart's decision, noting that the store was a "big hit to the community" due to affordable prices.

Walmart operates 180 other stores in entire Illinois.

In December, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon warned that rising theft cases are becoming an issue in their operations, which could lead to higher prices and store closures.

In his interview with CNBC, McMillon said they have already reinforced their safety and security measures, including enhancing cooperation with local law enforcement.
