According to StarWars.com, the phrase was first used in 1979 by Britain’s Conservative Party to congratulate Margaret Thatcher for accepting the position of prime minister. ABC News reported that the first "organized" May 4 event was celebrated in 2011 in Toronto, Ontario. This year is particularly special, as many fans are using the opportunity to celebrate the legacy of the film series’ beloved heroine, Carrie Fisher, who died of cardiac arrest December 27.
