  • Mo Salah now has scored 22 Champions League goals for Liverpool
  • He netted his 22nd UCL goal against Midtjylland on Wednesday
  • He joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017

Mohamed Salah said he is aiming to "extend the gap" over Steven Gerrard after the "Egyptian King" became the highest goal scorer in the Champions League for Liverpool FC on Wednesday.

Salah netted his 22nd Champions League goal for Liverpool – excluding the qualifiers – and therefore surpassed Steven Gerrard’s record of 21. Gerrard had captained the Anfield side to the European title in the 2004-05 season.

With 17 and 15 goals respectively, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are at No. 3 and 4 in the list of most goals in the Champions League by Liverpool players.

The 28-year-old forward achieved the milestone during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Midtjylland in Demark on Wednesday. Salah took 55 seconds to net the opening goal of the match, which turned out to be the quickest strike by a Liverpool player in the Champions League.

In a post-match interview, Salah said that it was a great feeling to be the top scorer for the club in the European competition.

"It's a great feeling to be the top scorer for the club, it's something I'm proud of. I need to keep going with that, score more goals, make the gap bigger between me and the others! I'm trying all the time to score goals to help the team to win games. One of the most important goals. They played good, almost man-marked us. We scored the goal early, but they strike back, they played a good game. The most important thing is to qualify, it's a game to learn [from]," Salah told BT Sport.

Salah, who joined Liverpool from Roma in the summer of 2017, netted his first Champions League goal for the Reds against Seville in September 2017. The Egyptian playmaker had an unbelievable debut season with the Anfield side, where he went on to score as many as 11 goals in the Champions League and overall, 44 goals across all tournaments.

Unfortunately, in the final against Real Madrid in Kyiv, Salah was forced off the field in tears following a rough tackle from Los Blancos skipper Sergio Ramos. Liverpool lost the final 3-1.

Jurgen Klopp’s side returned stronger in the 2018-19 season, which saw Liverpool lift their sixth Champions League trophy. Salah once again played a key role, having scored five goals in the tournament. The previous campaign, 2019-20, was a memorable one for Klopp’s side as they clinched Liverpool’s maiden Premier League title, which was also their first league win in 30 long years. With 23 goals, Salah finished with most goals for Liverpool including 19 in the league.
