Monday marks a federal holiday for many Americans as it is celebrated to honor the U.S. military members who died serving their country.

While the patriotic day serves to remember these heroes, it also is a day that many businesses decide to close their doors out of respect for these servicemen and women. Here’s a look at which companies are open on Monday and which ones are closed for the day.

What’s Closed?

Post Office

Since Memorial Day is considered a federal holiday, the United States Postal Service will not be delivering mail on Monday. It will resume its normal delivery service on Tuesday. All post office locations will also be closed.

Banks

The Federal Reserve Bank and most bank branches across the nation will be closed on Monday to observe the federal holiday.

Stock Markets

The New York Stock Exchange as well as the Nasdaq and bond markets will also be closed for Memorial Day.

Schools

Most schools across the U.S. are also closed on Monday that are holding in-person or virtual learning classes.

Libraries

The majority of public libraries across the states are also closed on Memorial Day.

DMV

Because the Department of Motor Vehicles is a federal office, it also takes the federal holiday off and will be closed across the U.S. on Monday.

What’s Open?

Stores

Many retailers have decided to keep their doors open on Memorial Day, including Target and Walmart, which will both be open normal operating hours.

Home improvement stores, such as Home Depot and Lowe’s, will also be open on Monday.

For those that need drug store or pharmacy pickup, CVS and Walgreens will be open, and Publix, Kroger, and Whole Foods are open for grocery needs, among other retailers.

However, some retailers may be operating on modified hours for the holiday.

Restaurants

Several restaurants across the U.S. will be open on Memorial Day. However, it is advised that you call ahead to check on the hours of operation as well as any COVID restrictions that may be in place due to the pandemic.

Many restaurants may also be offering discounts to active military members and veterans on Monday as well.

Movie Theaters

Some movie theaters, such as AMC, are open nationwide and will be open for Memorial weekend, depending on the COVID restrictions in the state it is operating in.

These cinemas may be operating at a reduced seating capacity and have additional COVID requirements in place for patrons. Call your local theater in advance to determine these requirements as well as the hours of operation.

National Parks

The National Park Service is also open to visitors on Monday, including many monuments and memorials that specifically are dedicated to honoring military servicemen and women for Memorial Day.

Face masks are required on NPS properties where physical distancing cannot be maintained as well as in all buildings and facilities.
