Former first lady Michelle Obama was a major advocate of education when her husband, former President Barack Obama, was in office, and if her recent appearances are anything to go by, she continues to stand for the cause even after leaving the White House.

During a cultural exchange earlier this month at Sidwell Friends School, the Washington D.C.-based nonprofit Quaker school that was attended by the then first daughter Malia Obama, nine students from Browning, Montana’s Browning High School were in for a surprise.

The former first lady was at the school to meet with her younger daughter Sasha Obama’s counselor, when the school’s head Bryan Garman asked Michelle if she could take out some time to meet the exchange students, the Great Falls Tribune reported Tuesday.

The students, who belonged to Browning’s Human Rights Club, were in the midst of giving presentations on Native culture when they were asked to get together at a conference room in the school.

“We were hurried out to the main campus house and there were secret service everywhere,” Amy Andreas, Browning librarian and Human Rights Club adviser, told the publication. “Then boom, in walks Michelle.”

The students said they were elated and ran up to hug Michelle, the most loved first lady in recent times. They also requested to click pictures, specifically selfies, with her and she “happily obliged.”

The group then discussed, privilege, success, the importance of help and the use of networking, as Michelle helped them with ways to make it in a world where the resources seem to be limited.

“Mostly what I took away was to ask for things if you want them,” student Dylan RunningCrane told the Tribune. “Kids on the reservation are never taught that. If you want something, you have to ask.”

Earlier this month, the former first lady also visited young girls at a high school in the city, as a part of her mission to promote education in all spheres.
