Unfortunately, Fox’s “9-1-1” aired its Season 2 midseason finale last week, which means a new episode is a little ways away. To top it off, the show’s return date has not yet been announced.

Still, fans can rest assured that the series will come back during the network’s midseason schedule, meaning the next new broadcast — Season 2, episode 11 — will have an air date in 2019. Until then, showrunner Tim Minear cleared a few things up about Season 2, episode 10, which introduced Maddie’s (Jennifer Love Hewitt) abusive ex-husband, Doug (Brian Hallisay), and saw Athena (Angela Bassett) and Bobby (Peter Krause) get engaged.

“That ‘magical helper’ was exactly the feel I was going for,” Minear told TheWrap of how they introduced Doug as being a nice guy to Chimney (Kenneth Choi). “Kind of ‘The Bishop’s Wife,’ Christmas-angel thing.”

He continued: “My feeling was, certain members of the audience, their antennas are gonna go up immediately, and for me that’s fine. And then for other members of the audience they are going to be like, ‘Why is this guy in the story?’ And then we hit them with the train.’”

As for Athena and Bobby this episode, after she originally asked him to move in, he one-upped her and asked her to marry him.

“Well, I think for people who have been through what they’ve been through, particularly him, and even Athena on some level — I think Bobby’s feeling is, he’s sure about her,” Minear told the outlet.

The showrunner continued: “And he knows how quickly life can change and how fast you can lose things. So I think for somebody who has been through the kind of trauma Bobby’s been through, making what might seem nuts or like a rash decision is maybe not rash at all. It may be the most sensible decision to make. But there is an element of it that may be in the moment — and I’m not sure it will be smooth sailing.”

Season 2 of “9-1-1” will return on Fox in 2019.
