With the spread of the coronavirus originating in China, some drugs may become in short supply. China manufactures and sells many of the ingredients used in certain drugs, along with India, and it is seeing challenges in getting these medications to pharmaceutical companies.

COVID-19 has caused several difficulties for Chinese drug manufacturers such as logistics and labor shortages caused by required quarantines, which are causing delays in production and shipments, Reuters reported.

China reportedly supplies 13% of the active pharmaceutical ingredients in the U.S. These ingredients are primarily used in generic drugs, which make up the majority of American prescriptions, including antibiotics, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, penicillin, and heparin.

But with these concerns, come a list from the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) that keeps track of drug shortages. The FDA added one drug to its drug shortage list last month, but now India has restricted the export of 26 drug ingredients and the medicines made from them that could result in a significant shortage in the near term, according to the news outlet.
