“X-Men: Days of Future Past” was expected to dominate the U.S. box office during the Memorial Day weekend and it did not disappoint. The latest entry in the “X-Men” franchise earned $90.7 million for the weekend and is on pace to rake in $110 million by the end of Memorial Day.

Box Office Mojo reports that “X-Men: Days of Future Past” has earned $90.7 million from 3,996 screens in its debut weekend. While the domestic box office is impressive, the movie’s global haul is breaking some lofty records for 20th Century Fox. According to the Hollywood Reporter, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” earned $171.1 million internationally and the global take of $261.8 million is the most ever for a 20th Century Fox film, besting the $241.5 million earned by “Avatar” in its debut in 2009.

The seventh film in the “X-men” franchise also beat the $203 million earned worldwide by “X-Men: The Last Stand,” notes THR, but, based on the projections, “Days of Future Past” will not beat the $122.9 million earned in 2006 by “The Last Stand” during the four-day domestic Memorial Day weekend box office. It will be interesting to see how “Days of Future Past” compares to “The Last Stand” and 2013’s “The Wolverine,” which earned $414.8 million worldwide, at the end of its theatrical run. The latest “X-Men” movie, directed by Bryan Singer, is also a critical success, earning a 91 percent “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes.

While Fox will be happy with the “Days of Future Past” box office, Warner Brothers will not be thrilled with the performance of “Blended.” The movie, which stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, earned $14.2 million over the weekend and is on pace to earn $18 million for the Memorial Day holiday. For Sandler, “Blended” is among his lowest openings ever, but the film has a relatively modest $45 million budget and was a hit with audiences, an A- CinemaScore, so it has a chance at being profitable for WB.

“Days of Future Past” knocked “Godzilla” from the top of the box office but the movie didn’t fall too far and came in second place, earning $31.4 million over the weekend. To date, “Godzilla” has earned $148.8 million domestically and $166.6 internationally for a worldwide total of $315.4 million.
