U.S. President Barack Obama will nominate Ashton Carter as the new defense secretary on Friday, according to media reports, citing the White House. The announcement is expected to be made at a nomination ceremony at 10 a.m. EST.

Carter, who is expected to be picked by the White House to replace Chuck Hagel, has previously served on a number of senior government positions, including as the deputy secretary of defense from October 2011 to December 2013, and as the undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics between April 2009 and October 2011.
