International Dance Day, a celebration that began more than three decades ago, takes place every April 29 to honor the creator of modern ballet, Jean-Georges Noverre.
Since the balletmaster’s death in 1810, modern dance has evolved. In the YouTube era, everything from Miley Cyrus’ twerking at the MTV VMAs, to the viral Harlem Shake, has made every kind of dance acceptable and accessible, to the masses. Television has also embraced dance culture with reality shows that highlight the personal struggles, challenges and drama behind a perfect pirouette.
Nothing says this more than the Lifetime series, “Dance Moms.” The reality show follows a young dance team, their helicopter mothers and a loudmouthed dance teacher as they try to collect as many trophies as they can. For fans, the show’s fourth season has been rife with controversy. Allegations of physical and emotional abuse, blatant favoritism and rigged results have all been charges the “Dance Moms” have laid on Abby Lee Miller, their daughters’ dance instructor.
Despite the drama in the wings, the young girls, their mothers and Abby Lee Miller never fail to show the value of tough love for the sake of a win.
