"You son of a b----!" According to our Twitter feed, that Lily quote pretty much summed up the whirlwind of emotions fans were feeling after “How I Met Your Mother” aired its series finale on Monday, March 31. Loyal viewers of the nine-season-long show were not only disappointed to learn “the Mother’s death hoax” was real but also pretty dissatisfied with the final scene of Robin and Ted ultimately getting together.
Now, we didn’t mind either of those moments. In fact, we anticipated them, considering the entire sitcom focused around Ted and Robin’s tumultuous relationship. They even had a deal that if they were both still single at age 40, they'd get married! However, there was one thing about the series finale that really got under our skin: the scene that wasn’t shown! According to David Baker, the self-titled “prop master” of “HIMYM,” a scene featuring Robin Sparkles, was cut from the series finale. Talk about a dagger to the heart, eh?
Alyson Hannigan had previously confessed on Twitter that 18 whole minutes were cut from the series finale, including a scene that featured Lily losing her Ted-Won’t-End-Up-With-Robin bet. While we understand the need to condense the final episode to the most pivotal moments, we think Carter Bays and Craig Thomas totally blew it by leaving out the Canadian singing sensation.
And, guys, this wasn’t just any Robin Sparkles moment. This was the Robin Sparkles moment. According to Baker, Robin, played by Cobie Smulders, was supposed to sing “Mall” during her wedding reception, accompanied by the Mother on bass. And that’s not all! During this deleted scene, Robin accessorized her wedding gown with a retro jean jacket that set the mood as she sang a duet with the one and only robot. What a legendary moment this could have been. But unfortunately, it didn’t make the cut.
Hopefully—fingers crossed—Bays and Thomas add this phenomenal moment to their Season 9 DVD. The creators hinted that a few unanswered questions would be revealed during the DVD’s fall debut.
“There may be a few mysteries you think you’ve seen the last of, but there might be a little something later,” Thomas revealed. “Without giving too much away, we toyed around with creating a little video to be released sometime after the series finale to sort of pay off one last little thing.”
