WWDC 2017 is being eagerly anticipated mostly because of iOS 11. The new software update is expected to bring along features such as:

Improved 3D Touch: The operating system update is expected to let users make better use of Apple’s pressure-sensing technology. The functionality is currently used in a limited manner on iPhone 7 but is expected to have a wider application on Apple’s upcoming device the iPhone 8. The device is expected to have pressure sensitivity throughout its body and even have pressure-sensitive buttons instead of physical ones.

Kinect-like augmented reality based functionality: iOS 11 will prepare the ground for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8 device. It is expected to have a 3D-sensing camera which will be used for both augmented reality-based gaming and facial recognition, similar to Microsoft’s Kinect technology, which detects motions and replicates the effects in virtual games.

No 32-bit support: iOS 11 is expected to end support for 32-bit applications, which would entail that software support for iPhone 5 and lower version would be cut off.

Improved Maps: Apple is expected to overhaul Apple Maps to keep competing with Google Maps. It could include improved navigation features such as inside views of buildings and improvements to car navigation.

Improved Siri: This is the biggest and the most awaited feature expected to be revealed at the event. Siri was the first conversational voice-assistant when it was unveiled back in 2011, but since last year, when artificial intelligence (AI) based voice assistants such as Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa were unveiled, it has lagged behind in terms of functionality. Many other companies including Apple’s major rival Samsung have come out with their own AI-based voice assistant and Siri seems to be left behind.
