Until 2014, the concept of a phone without bezels was considered something far-fetched. But then, Samsung launched its first phone with a curved edge — the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge — which obliterated the side bezels, and in terms of smartphone displays, the rest is history.

Ever since then, smartphone makers have tried to make bezels obsolete — the Samsung Galaxy S8 being the most recent and may be the best attempt yet at doing so. While the device might be the first one with an edge-to-edge display without side bezels, Samsung and LG, the two companies which manufacture most high-end smartphone displays have more in store. They are designing smartphone displays with four curved edges, according to a report from Korean publication ETNews published Monday.

This means that some of the upcoming smartphones might be truly bezel-less — the display would cover almost 98 percent of the front of the device. The report added that Samsung was originally going to supply such displays to Apple for the iPhone 8. But the company seems to have opted for a flat OLED display because of supply chain problems, according to some reports.

Making such displays is not easy — both Samsung and LG are still facing problems of a blind spot in bezel-less displays where the touch function doesn’t work. Both companies haven’t been able to get the lamination of the display correct.

If they are able to do it in time, we might be able to see a smartphone with a bezel-less display this year — maybe on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 or even the LG V20 successor. If not, there is a chance we could see it on the Samsung Galaxy S9, expected to release in the first half of 2018.
