Famed comedian Charlie Murphy, the older brother of actor and comedian Eddie Murphy, died Wednesday after succumbing to a long battle with leukemia.

TMZ first reported that Murphy had died Wednesday morning in a New York City hospital while he undergoing chemotherapy treatment. He was best known for some of his infamous sketches on “Chappelle’s Show.”

Murphy’s late wife, Tisha Taylor Murphy, also passed away from cancer in 2009. They had two children together. Murphy also had another child from a prior relationship.

The comedian was born July 12, 1959, in New York City and served in the U.S. Navy until 1984, according to IMDb. Murphy made his film debut in the 1989 film “Harlem Nights,” which was directed by Eddie Murphy.

Charlie Murphy is especially well-known for his role – and famous encounters with Rick James -- on David Chappelle’s “Chappelle’s Show.” Murphy went on to co-write other films, including “Vampire in Brooklyn” in 1995, which starred Eddie Murphy, and “Norbit” in 2007.

“I believe everyone has a gift, an ability,” Murphy said in a 2011 article for Esquire Magazine. “Something that you actually realize and start to hone. There are people who are acknowledged as the top electrician. The top dentist,” he said.

“When I was a kid, I was into laughing. That’s the first sign. Not that you’re making people laugh, but that you’re laughing. You’re into acknowledging funny.”

In honor of the late comic actor, fans have immortalized Murphy on social media. Here are 10 gifs and memes in remembrance of the late celebrity.
