The Louisville Police Department (LMPD) have opened up an investigation after a 10-year-old girl allegedly crashed into a family home in the Kentucky city and told the police she "wanted to kill people" when questioned.

In the incident that happened Friday around 2.30 p.m. EST, the homeowner Joshua Pate had just gotten home from work when he heard a sound like an explosion, KRON-4 reported. The unnamed girl had gotten behind the wheel of a pickup truck and crashed the vehicle through a wall of the house.

It was not immediately clear how she had acquired keys to the truck.

"It sounded like a bomb went off," Pate told local news networks. "Everybody was in shock – everybody’s still in shock."

Five of Pate’s children were in the room at the time. However, neither the girl nor the others in the house were injured. Pate said the furniture had saved their lives.

"The loveseat slid around and made kind of like a barrier — the back of the loveseat is kind of tall, like, this high, and I think the kids just slid with the loveseat," he said.

He then overheard the girl speaking to police officers at the scene and saying she had crashed the car to kill people.

"[The officer] couldn’t believe what she said. He was like 'excuse me?' and she said 'I wanted to kill people' and he said 'I’m sorry, what did you say?' and she said 'I wanted to kill people,'" Pate said.

Meanwhile, the girl also hit another victim’s car before crashing into the home. Fox News affiliate WDRB reported that the truck hit Kristina Bryan’s car so hard that it spun several times, creating cuts in the pavement. The vehicle was totaled but Bryan only suffered minor scrapes and bruises.

She told KRON: "When I heard it was a 10-year-old girl my first reaction should have been 'is she ok?' But when I looked down there she was walking from the truck to get into the back of a cop car I knew she was okay."

"Where was the parents when this little girl even got into the car?" Bryan added. "How did this little girl even get access to the keys?"

WDRB cited the 10-year-old’s grandmother, who was not named, saying that she could have been influenced by an animated TV show where a character steals the keys to a car. She added that they had been trying to hide the keys from the girl for some time now because she had made attempts to take the keys from the counter before.

Pate told news networks that he forgave the girl but expected an apology from her family.

"All we want is an apology from the family, pretty much," he said. "We haven’t heard from them and haven’t heard from anybody." Both Pate and Bryan also stated that they planned to take legal action against the girl’s family.

However, WDRB cited a spokesperson for LMPD expressing doubts that charges would be filed.
