Time to clean up for the new year! Jeshoots//Unsplash

It’s a new year and as the old saying goes, “out with the old, in with the new.” This couldn’t have been more apt as it’s cleaning season for the new year 2022. Time to say "goodbye to 2021" and get started with your new year cleaning resolutions because a clean house attracts good luck according to some people. Getting rid of old, dirty belongings is symbolic of getting rid of the things that are weighing you down. As they say, “new year, new you.”

At the start of this year, be sure to include your home in your new year resolution for 2022, not just getting fit or saving up more money. Here are a few new year cleaning tips to help you get the ball rolling.

1. Declutter, declutter

Take Marie Kondo's advice and check if all the things that you have in your home still spark joy. If they don’t, then it’s time to let go. Clear out your most used space or room first of clutter. Seeing all the unnecessary items in your favorite space can be draining and just takes up precious space. So out with the old and in with the new. Remove the things that you no longer use or have no fond emotions for. You can resell them for extra cash or donate them to charity so that someone else will have better use for it.

2. Think before buying

We all tend to want more than what we already own or have. Before indulging in another online shopping spree, pause and think. Do you already own a pair of walking shoes or is this another impulse purchase? Do you have the space for it in your home? Ask yourself these questions before clicking “buy now” or adding it to your cart. If you must have it, make it a habit to let go of one thing that you already have in your home so it doesn’t end up as clutter in the back of your closet or up in the attic collecting dust.

3. Finish what you already have

It’s easy to get anxious about running out of your most-used ingredients or toiletries, but stocking up on these can only lead to clutter. It can be a bad habit to buy more than what you need which can lead to you forgetting about it or never using them at all. Before you throw out that bottle of cooking oil or tube of toothpaste, make sure you use every drop and ensure you've finished it before replacing it with a new one. You end up building the habit of consuming less and maximizing your resources more -- while having less mess at home.

4. Start small

The lazy, slow pace that comes after all the holiday gatherings and parties is meant for relaxation to recharge you for the new year. But now that it’s back to reality, make sure that you don’t force yourself to finish tidying up all at once so you don't get turned off by the idea of decluttering. If reorganizing the kitchen or your bedroom is too much of a task right now, start small. Clean surfaces as you go, one-by-one. Clear out your workstation and make it conducive to working or clear your dresser of used and expired toiletries to get you in the mood to stick to your self-care routine.

5. Create a sanctuary

Have your own sanctuary that you should keep spotless and tidy for your well-being. As it’s a space you created for yourself, it easily becomes a priority in your new year’s cleaning checklist. Whether it’s the most-used room or one that’s hands-off, make sure it’s where you can have me-time and invest in it. For example, if it’s your bedroom and you want a space for pure relaxation, invest in a CBD Pillow that is embedded with millions of CBD microcapsules to help you relax and sleep through the night.

6. Revamp your favorite room

Whether it’s the living room, kitchen, or bedroom, you can easily revamp the space without heavily remodeling by moving furniture and items around. You can even treat yourself and your home to some new items to brighten up certain spaces. Just make sure that you’ve finished decluttering and donating before you start acquiring new things. If you love your bedroom, spruce it up with a new memory foam mattress from PlushBeds. If a mattress is too much, then get new organic cotton sheets in an unexpected colorway to breathe new life into your room.

7. Have a toolset handy

Rather than having a hammer here and a screwdriver there, have all your tools in one place. Having storage boxes for your hand tools isn’t ideal either. Storage boxes are best for power tools and larger equipment but not hand tools that can get lost in the jumble. Imagine having to dig for a hammer among cordless drills and saws. Invest in a hand toolset like the Stanley 170-piece toolset from Acme Tools that has all the basic tools you need and a variety of sockets for your convenience.

8. Be more mindful

Cleaning your home isn’t always about tidying up for your sake, it’s also about how to make your home better -- and that includes reducing your carbon footprint. It’s easy when you're just being more conscientious with the energy you use. Turn off the lights and other appliances when not in use such as the air conditioner. You can even turn to smart solutions like the Ecobee 3 Lite Smart Thermostat that uses a smart sensor to control room temperature and lets you adjust it accordingly via smartphone.

9. Replace old appliances

Your old appliances can be doing your electric bill more harm than good. Donate your old appliances and electronics and opt for better quality ones that have energy-saving options as the smarter solution. Replace old TVs and monitors with smart ones or at least those that use LED screens like the Dell Curved LED Curved Gaming Monitor that efficiently uses LEDs for its screen light.

10. Clean during your idle time

Make a habit of cleaning, organizing and tidying up during your idle time. We don’t mean during your downtime which you have dedicated for resting. But if you’re on a break or waiting for your Uber driver, make it a habit to organize or tidy up spaces in your home during this time.

11. Have a donation box ready

If you have a donation box, it will be easier to let go of your unwanted things. Having a box that’s ready to be shipped off to your preferred charity makes it feel like you’re doing good by giving away unwanted things.
