A 12-year-old boy in India succumbed to death after he was beaten by a teacher for failing a class test, police said Sunday.

The incident occurred on Oct. 7 at a private school in Noida, a city that's approximately 10 miles from the national capital of New Delhi. The child's mother made the complaint against the teacher, identified only by his first name, Shobharan, for punishing the boy after he failed a test Friday.

The unidentified child, who was receiving treatment for his injuries, died Sunday.

"Shobharan had given the students a test on October 7, in which some failed. He caned these students on their hands. However, the boy appeared to have injuries on more than just his hands," Ram Badan Singh, a senior investigating officer said, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The 42-year-old teacher allegedly punished 10 students who failed the test, including the deceased child, reports said.

Meanwhile, the police registered a case against Shobharan on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Shobharan was with the child when he was rushed to a nearby hospital, and when he was later shifted to a specialty hospital for treatment. However, he is on the run since the child's death, police said, as reported by The Times of India.

"He is absconding and four teams have been formed to nab him. He did not go back to his house, and his phone number is switched off right now," Singh continued.

Meanwhile, the exact cause of the child's death is not known and the investigators are awaiting an autopsy report. However, according to reports, the deceased child was already unwell when the teacher punished him.

"We have been told that the child was already sick and are investigating as to what symptoms he had on the day of the incident," Singh added.

In a similar incident reported in September, a 15-year-old student in India succumbed to death after his teacher allegedly thrashed him for misspelling a word during a test. The teacher, identified as Ashwini Singh from the city of Lucknow, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, allegedly assaulted his student, Nikit Dohre, using sticks and rods. Dohre succumbed to his injuries at a hospital 19 days after the alleged assault.
