A 13-year-old Georgia boy was charged with murder Saturday after he fatally shot his mother, a 37-year-old navy veteran, at their home Friday.

The teen was taken into custody after his mother, identified as Dominique Bowers, was found with a fatal gunshot wound Friday at around 1.30 p.m. ET, the Warner Robins Police Department said in a statement. Authorities confirmed Bowers to be the mother of the teenage boy, whose name wasn't revealed.

The juvenile was apprehended and was currently being held at the Crisp County Youth Detention Center, the police said. The teen made his first court appearance Saturday morning, Crime Online reported, citing the cops.

Bowers' body was discovered after the suspect himself dialed 911. The child was found on a different block in the neighborhood and was arrested. He was also facing an additional charge of aggravated assault, People reported.

The teenager was set to be prosecuted as an adult in connection with the shooting death of Bowers, 13 WMAZ reported, citing authorities. It wasn't immediately clear what led to the shooting and whether the mother-son duo lived in the same apartment.

According to Bowers' Facebook page, she served in the U.S. Navy and was originally from New York. Bowers acquired a psychology degree from Roanoke College in Virginia and worked for the Virginia department of transportation. She was engaged to be married, her Facebook page indicated.

In June, an Oklahoma teen accidentally shot and killed his mother at their home. Upon realizing his mother was dead, he shot himself too. The teenager was handling a gun in the family's living room when it accidentally went off, the cops said. The bullet tore through a wall and hit his mother in the head, killing her instantly. The mother was pronounced dead at the scene. “It’s tragic. It boils down to an accidental shooting,” said Major Bradley Rule with the Del City Police Department at the time. “To be handling this firearm and then it goes off, I’m sure that was terrifying in and of itself. But then to go around the corner and see the result of it, shooting your own mother, I can’t imagine what he felt.”
