Two people were killed and an officer injured in a shooting at a Walmart at Southaven, Mississippi, early Tuesday morning.

The suspected gunman was shot by the police and taken to the Regional One hospital; his condition is currently unknown.

According to Local News 24, four people including a police officer were shot Tuesday morning. The two who died are Walmart employees. Police are investigating the incident on the 6800 block of Southcrest Parkway, near I-55 and Goodman Road.

According to DeSoto County Sherriff Bill Rasco, police responded to the scene early Tuesday morning, after calls about an active shooter at the Walmart. The shooting took place between 6:30 a.m and 6:40 a.m. On arriving they found the two Walmart employees dead. The officer who was shot during the incident was hit on his bullet-proof vest. He was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay.

A Walmart employee told Local News 24 that the shooter was a former employee who worked at the store for 25 years before being fired. It is immediately unclear if more people were injured and the motive for the shooting.

Southaven is along the Mississippi-Tennessee border, about 13 miles from Memphis. The shooting comes just days after a 19-year-old man opened fire at the Gilroy Garlic festival in California, killing three and injuring 12.

In the wake of Gilroy shootings, California Gov. Gavin Newsom blasted the Republicans and President Donald Trump for lack of action when it comes to gun violence.

"California’s doing its part," Newsom said. "But, Jesus, these guys, the folks in the White House, have been supporting the kind of policies to roll back the work we’re doing in states like ours, to get rid of large capacity magazines, to address the issues that we’re trying to advance on background checks on ammunition."
