A two-month-old baby died allegedly of suffocation after the door of the ambulance that was carrying him to a hospital malfunctioned. The incident took place Tuesday in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh.

According to reports, the infant was being transported to a hospital as he needed a cardiac surgery. When the child's father Ambika Kumar tried to open the ambulance door he found that it was jammed. When he tried breaking the windows of the vehicle, he was warned against damaging government property.

“I was urging them to the break the door or a window since my kid had cardiac problem but my efforts went in vain,” Kumar said, according to local reports.

The baby was trapped for two hours as his desperate parents tried to open the door but were unable to get their child out. The baby died inside the vehicle.

GVK EMRI (Emergency Management and Research Institute), which runs the ambulance service in the state, denied the couple’s allegation.

“The infant was already dead before reaching the hospital. When the ambulance reached Ambedkar hospital, its door got stuck for a few minutes. The technicians then took the baby out of the vehicle through a window,” Shibu Kumar, a representative for GVK EMRI, said according to Indian newspaper the Hindustan Times.

Authorities are awaiting the autopsy report to determine the cause of death of the infant. It remains unclear if the ambulance service provider will be charged for negligence in the case.
