In a suspected case of child abuse in Connecticut, two family members were arrested Wednesday (May 20) after a 2-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police responded to a home on May 2 after receiving a report of an injured toddler who was unresponsive. The girl was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. The girl, who had suffered severe head injuries and had difficulty breathing, was then airlifted to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. The child’s injuries were described as life-threatening by the doctors. She remained in critical condition as of May 20 and was being treated in the intensive care unit for multiple injuries.

Investigators, who suspected that it was a case of child abuse and neglect, arrested the girl’s father, 32-year-old Raymond D. Burgison, and grandmother, 54-year-old Lisa Burgison. Police said the two also hindered their investigation. They were charged with making a false statement to police, risk of injury to a child, and interfering with an officer. They were being held on a $500,000 bond each and were scheduled to appear in court on May 22.

Meanwhile, a criminal investigation was ongoing to find out how the girl sustained the injuries. Investigators have asked anyone with any information to call detectives at 203-574-6941 or CrimeStoppers at 203-755-1234.

The incident comes weeks after an Alabama teen was arrested for striking his 1-month-old daughter in face and head. Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home and found an infant with bruises and red marks on her head and face. The girl was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Investigation revealed that the child suffered injuries after she was struck in the face and head by her father, 19-year-old Ty Allen Mason. He was arrested and charged with torture and willful abuse of a child.

In another incident earlier this month, an Idaho man was jailed for throwing his infant baby out of frustration. The 4-month-old baby was taken to a local hospital with injuries and tests revealed that there was bleeding in the baby’s brain. The baby’s father, identified as 33-year-old Charles Wade Miller, told the investigators that he threw the infant on his bed out of frustration. He was arrested and charged with two counts of injury to a child.
