In a horrific case of human sacrifice, a 30-year-old father allegedly killed his 2-year-old daughter in order to maintain domestic peace. The incident took place in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

Local police arrested the accused after a complaint was registered. The accused had allegedly discussed his domestic problems with a friend, who was also a black magic healer. The friend suggested that human sacrifice should be made to maintain peace at his home.

“On Sunday, at around 10 pm, accused, Wajid strangulated his two-year-old daughter Tarannum to death while other family members were sleeping. He then slit her throat with a sharp object and buried the body in a nearby field," a police official told local media the Hindustan Times. “At around 11 pm, victim’s mother, Rehana, filed a complaint at Kakrauli police station. Police soon arrested Wajid from his residence and recovered the body. However, the (other) accused managed to flee. He was later arrested."

Police said that the main accused was a laborer and lived with his wife and five children -- three daughters and two sons.

During questioning, the accused admitted that he killed his daughter to resolve the ongoing disputes in his family. Police also said that Wajid is continuously changing his statements and there is a possibility that he had murdered his daughter out of frustration. The accused also said that he chose to sacrifice his two-year-old daughter as she reminded him of his past girlfriend.

In a similar incident in the Indian state of Odisha earlier this year, a man sacrificed his 12-year-old sister to appease a goddess. The victim had left home with her brother, 28-year-old Subhoban Rana. When the girl did not return home, a missing complaint was filed with the police. The accused was detained for questioning during which he confessed to killing his sister. Following the confession, the man was taken into custody. The headless body of the victim was recovered from a nearby forest.

In another incident in Odisha last year, a 12-year-old boy was sacrificed by his uncle for good crop harvest. The accused, Chintamani Majhi, lured the victim to a field and then attacked the boy with an axe. Upon hearing the victim’s screams, the boy’s brother rushed to the field and found his severed head. The accused was arrested and charged.
