KEY POINTS

  • Taylor Swift, The Weeknd were the biggest winners at this year's American Music Awards
  • Swift won Artist of the Year, Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, and Favorite Music Video
  • The Weeknd took home Favorite Male Artist - Soul/R&B, Favorite Song, and Favorite Soul/R&B Album

Taylor Swift and The Weeknd turned out to be the biggest winners at this year's American Music Awards (AMAs) after picking up three trophies each in different categories.

The "Folklore" hitmaker was nominated in four categories and emerged victorious in three, including Artist of the Year. Swift edged out fellow nominees like The Weeknd, Post Malone, Roddy Ricch, and Justin Bieber to win the accolade.

The singer also won Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist and Favorite Music Video for "Cardigan."

The Grammy-winning artist was not physically present to collect the award and interestingly submitted only one speech for the awards ceremony, Variety reported.

Swift told the audience that she was unable to attend the star-studded event because she is currently busy recording her "old music."

"The reason I can’t be with you tonight is because I’m actually recording all of my old music in the studio where we originally recorded it," Variety quoted Swift, as saying.

The musician now holds the record of winning the most number of trophies at the AMAs (32).

On the other hand, The Weeknd also took home three awards. The "Blinding Lights" hitmaker was one of the frontrunners to win the most awards at the AMAs and he certainly did not disapppint.

The artist won the Favorite R&B Album for "After Hours" along with Favorite Male Artist (Soul/R&B), and Favorite Song for "Heartless."

The Weeknd accepted the Favorite Album award with his face covered in bandages. It is said that the singer sported the look to educate people what driving under the influence can do to a person.

Other notable winners were Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, BTS, Harry Styles, Dua Lipa, Lady Gaga, and Blake Shelton.
