A 3-month-old baby with serious injuries was found outside a home in North Carolina.

The baby was pronounced dead later at the hospital. The mother, Naomi Khan, 24, was arrested and charged with murder.

Officers from the Dunn Police Department responded Sunday to a Harnett County home after receiving reports about a baby being found outdoors in the Dunn neighborhood, CBS 17 reported.

"It's going to be a 3-month-old," a dispatcher said during the recorded call to the police.

"The mother advised she located him outside," the dispatcher added.

Khan claimed she did not know how her baby got wound up outside the house, according to the initial details provided to cops.

"She doesn't know how he got out there, however, he has a laceration to his neck," the dispatcher was quoted saying.

Officers arrived at the scene around 11:30 p.m. Sunday and found the infant outside the house on North Ellis Avenue. The baby had lacerations on his neck and was rushed to the hospital. He was eventually pronounced dead.

Khan was arrested and is facing a first-degree murder charge for the infant's death.

The mother made her first court appearance Monday morning and is scheduled to appear in court next on Dec. 20.

Residents in the area were shocked to hear the news about the baby's alleged murder.

Ruth Norris was spending Monday afternoon babysitting her grandson when she learned about the incident. "They're not right in the head. Need help," Norris told ABC11.

"They should have gave that baby up and found a home for that baby," Norris added.

She said she was worried about telling the mother of her grandson about the neighbors being involved in an infant's murder.

" ... This is going to tear her up about as much as it did me," Norris added.

Army veteran Alex Agosto lives two houses away from Khan and was shocked to hear of such an incident happening in their neighborhood, which he described as generally laid back and quiet.

"Devastating the way the world is going today. We don't have the details of what happened and what her mindset was, but whenever you hear about this it's devastating," Agosto told the outlet.
