A 5-year-old Pennsylvania boy was fatally shot by his 6-year-old sibling after being left alone with an unsecured gun in a bedroom, according to a police report.

Connor Wolfe, 5, was shot at about 5:30 p.m. ET on Monday. The Penn Hills police chief said the boy had died at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh around 6:30 p.m. He was not identified until Tuesday morning by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office.

"Detectives discovered evidence suggesting that a 6-year-old sibling accidentally shot the victim while handling an unsecured firearm present inside the residence," a statement released on Tuesday said.

Police responded to a call for a “shooting incident,” and found the children alone in the house.

“There was children playing in the back bedroom when one of the children was shot," Lt. Venerando Costa told WTAE, an ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh.

Penn Hills police and Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit said the gun is legally owned by a parent of the children. The parent is cooperating with police officials, according to a statement.

Wolfe is in kindergarten at Penn Hills School District. "We ask all members of our PH community to remember Connor and his family in your thoughts and prayers," the school district said in a statement.
