KEY POINTS

  • The recall affects 'Capri Sun Wild Cherry Flavored Juice Drink Blend'
  • The affected products were shipped to 'select states' on the East Coast and the Midwest
  • Those who have the affected products are advised not to consume them

Select Capri Sun juice drinks are being recalled because they may be contaminated with cleaning solution. Thousands of cases of the popular product are affected.

Kraft Heinz learned of the problem after it received customer complaints about the taste of the product, the company noted in a press release on Aug. 12. It said that the problem was that a diluted cleaning solution that's used on the food processing equipment "was inadvertently introduced into a production line at one of our factories."

The recall "only" affects Capri Sun Wild Cherry Flavored Juice Drink Blend, according to Kraft Heinz. Affected products have the "best when used by" date of June 25, 2023.

The products were sold "by the carton" at retail. The manufacturer's code on the pouch of the affected products is "between 0733-0900," while the manufacturer's code on the carton would be "between 0733-1000," the company noted.

In total, some 5,760 cases were affected by the voluntary recall. Customers may check the company's website to find a full description of the affected items.

As for where the products were sold, a Kraft Heinz spokesperson told USA Today that they were shipped to "select states" on the East Coast and the Midwest.

"(H)owever, we can't know where retailers shipped the product so we don't want to be overly prescriptive on location," the spokesperson said, as per the outlet.

Customers who have the recalled Capri Sun products are being advised not to consume them. While "the risk of serious adverse health consequences is remote," the spokesperson noted that the taste may be rather "off" and it may lead to an upset stomach.

Instead, customers can return the affected product to the store from where they bought it. They may also contact the company at 1-800-280-8252 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST, Monday to Friday, to help them figure out if the product in their possession is included in the recall, and "receive reimbursement."

"The company is actively working with retail partners and distributors to remove potentially impacted product from circulation," Kraft Heinz noted in its press release and added that it is "committed to upholding the highest safety and quality standards."
