Confirming the news, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson in the Western Cape Eric Ntabazalila told media outlet the South African, "The victim had head injuries, internal injuries, multiple bruises and bite marks."

The boy’s parents, who were not identified by local media, were taken into custody Friday. They appeared in court Monday and were charged with murder.

"Be advised that members attached to Bishop Lavis FCS arrested two persons aged 32 (male) and 31 (female) on Nov. 13, 2020. They appeared on Monday Nov. 16, 2020 in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder. The case was remanded until Jan. 22, 2021 for a formal bail application, they stay in custody. The state is opposing bail,” police officer Van Wyk told the website.

Angus Mckenzie, a member of the local government, had gone to the child's house and posted about it on Facebook: "I visited the home of an 8-month-old baby who was alleged abused and killed by his parents on Friday. His parents have both appeared today and will remain in custody until late in January for bail application - of which I will oppose."

"A defenseless little baby who could not say 'stop it,' who could not shout out for help, but only wanted love and care will never have any of it again because that little boy is dead today," Mckenzie added.

He told the South African the couple’s neighbors said the infant was a victim of child abuse.

"From speaking to people in the area, it is quite clear that is believed that this has been an ongoing case of child abuse. An eight-month-old child was abused so badly that the child is no longer with us anymore. I’m shocked to my core, I’m heartbroken, I’m devastated, I’m disgusted," he said.
