A two-month-old baby, who was critically injured after being allegedly abused by his father, has died at a hospital in California.

The baby reportedly died Saturday night at the UC Davis Medical Center, the Stockton Police Department said while announcing his death Sunday, CBS Sacramento reported.

The baby boy’s father, Matthew Garcia, 24, was arrested Friday and charged with felony child abuse. He was taken to San Joaquin County Jail after the arrest. According to San Joaquin County Jail records, Garcia's bond was set at $1,550,000, and he remains in custody, ABC10 reported.

It was not clear if the charges against Garcia were updated after the baby's death.

The baby was admitted to the hospital with critical injuries on Nov. 11. The hospital authorities identified the injuries on the baby were consistent with that of child abuse and informed the police.

The child was put into the pediatric intensive care unit at the hospital. However, the doctors did not expect the baby to survive as he was severely injured.

The police believe the alleged abuse of the child happened at the family’s home in Souse Park, Sacramento, although they did not clarify how this was determined. The police confirmed an investigation was initiated after the baby was admitted to the hospital and detectives were examining the case.

In a similar incident of child abuse, the parents of a one-year-old boy were arrested in Northern California on Oct. 9, US news reported. The baby, who had severe burns, was hospitalized in Magalia, following which the hospital authorities contacted the police on suspicion of child abuse.

The investigators believe that the boy was burned as a result of something hot spilling on him. The incident allegedly happened after his parents left him in the care of a juvenile babysitter the previous night at their home. The police found the parents waited about 14 hours to take him to the hospital despite knowing of the life-threatening injuries he sustained.
