A newborn baby abandoned in a field in India was rescued by locals after a dog protected through the night. The infant girl was found in an isolated area in a village, in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, on Saturday.

The following morning, villagers heard the baby’s cries and found her, uninjured, surrounded by a litter of puppies. They also found the mother dog wandering nearby and believe that the canine guarded the newborn along with her puppies, Times Now News reported.

On finding the baby abandoned in the middle of nowhere, locals alerted the cops, who arrived at the scene and rushed the infant to a nearby hospital. Police said the child was doing well, despite being left in severe cold.

"We had come out for work and at 11 am we saw that there is a newborn baby girl was lying in the village amid dogs. Then, we informed the health department. After that, the newborn was taken to the hospital," a villager told local media.

Meanwhile, IPS officer Dipanshu Kabra shared the story on Twitter, along with a photo of the baby sleeping beside a litter of pups. He also suspects the newborn was abandoned because she is a girl.

"I was upset after reading the news. The girl has been taken to the hospital by the police, the investigation of the case is going on. If you are suffering from the thinking of discrimination between son and daughter, then you are not fit to be a parent,” he tweeted.

The photo has since gone viral with people calling for strict action against the family of the baby.

"The culprits should get strict punishment under the law. Stop such sins, give up orthodox thinking, consider son and daughter equal," Kabra added.

Cops are trying to locate the baby’s family. The villagers have also reportedly told the authorities to take strict action against the newborn’s family and to not return the child to them.
