Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, one of India and the world's most famous movie stars, checked in to Seven Hills Hospital in Mumbai late Monday night for the birth of her first child.

On Tuesday, a spokesman for the hospital confirmed to The Times of India that the megastar was in house for the baby's delivery.

There was tighter than usual security on Tuesday and a crowd had assembled outside the hospital to get news of the junior-most Bachchan's arrival, a source told the Times.

Aishwarya checked into the hospital's VIP suite, which consists of a bedroom for the expectant mother, a living room, a kitchen and a toilet. The Bachchans selected the hospital after Aishwarya's sister-in-law Shrima gave birth to a baby boy there last year.

Aishwarya, 37, and Abhishek, 35, married in 2007, and pregnancy rumors have floated around ever since.

Rai's father-in-law, actor Amitabh Bachchan, broke news of the pregnancy in June, revealing that Rai would likely deliver in November.

He tweeted late Monday night:

A day of expectation ... but another day! The Lord has his ways and they are most special ... we wait!!

The Bollywood star has visited the hospital for regular check-ups, and on Saturday, was spotted with hubby Abhishek and sister-in-law Shweta Nanda.

Often dubbed the most beautiful woman in the world, Rai is one of Bollywood's pre-eminent leading ladies. She burst onto the global scene when she won the Miss World crown in 1994. The former architecture major rose to become one of the nation's leading models, landing a major campaign with Pepsi and appearing in Vogue Magazine.

By the mid-90s, Rai was a rising Bollywood star. Her film debut in Mani Rathnam's Iruvar was met with overwhelming critical acclaim.

Over the years, Rai has starred in several English-language films including Bride & Prejudice, The Last Legion, and The Pink Panther 2.

Bollywood fans were in a frenzy on Tuesday as news hit that Rai checked into the hospital. Twitter was abuzz with well-wishers and the term Aishwarya Rai was trending worldwide on Yahoo.

The buzz intensified Tuesday evening as various publications claimed to have inside knowledge on the birth.

Several Indian publications reported that Rai was taken into the labor room at 11 a.m. The Hindustan Times, however, quoted an unnamed source at Seven Hills Hospital saying that Rai is expected to deliver her first child in the early hours of Wednesday, and that doctors induced labor on Tuesday.

The procedure involves applying a gel on the cervix. It's done when the woman is past or close to the expected delivery date, or has uterine problems.

The Times of India quotes a friend of the family saying that the hospital is forbidden from making any statements.

There are strict instructions that only the family will announce the baby's birth.

For now, fans eagerly await any news on Aishwarya Rai.
