Apple has been granted a patent for adding cameras using a band peripheral to its Apple Watch. The company could potentially add this new feature in the next Apple Watch Series 5. Here’s what we know about this new Apple technology.

The company had the Apple Watch camera band patent approved by the U.S Patent and Trademark Office just recently. The camera band would allow the Apple Watch to have a camera on its own to use for apps and features normally found on smartphones. Facetime calls, video recording, and even taking photos would now be possible with just the Apple Watch.

The patent notes that the band would be made of elastic materials which would allow its users to adjust the camera any way they want. The band can also be set where the camera is just hovers above near the Apple Watch’s screen.

While the new camera system seems to be impressive, not all of Apple’s patents are developed into actual, working devices. Potentially, this camera band for Apple Watches could be included in the next Series 5 iteration or shelved forever for the company’s future devices.

However, Apple has recently confirmed the watchOS last June during the Worldwide Developers Conference 2015. Like how Apple divided iTunes into separate apps for different media they sell, the company is also planning to give each of their devices its own OS.

The watchOS is designed to help the Apple Watch operate itself without the need of a paired iPhone. Its full features are yet to be known but giving it a camera feature would definitely boost the device’s use as its own device.

For now, we’ve yet to know when Apple will reveal detrails about the next Apple Watch Series 5. Its reveals have been quiet and sudden as some new devices have just popped out on their official newsroom this way. Even the next 2019 iPhone generation is yet to be known on its release date albeit many fans are looking forward to its next iteration. Like all the Apple devices with vague release dates, we’ll have to wait for more official statements from Cupertino tech company itself.
