  • The ranges can tip over if something heavy is placed on the oven door
  • The affected products were sold at various stores from May to July this year
  • Affected customers should contact GE Appliances to schedule a free in-home service

About 132,000 free-standing and slide-in gas and electric ranges are being voluntarily recalled due to tip-over risk.

The problem is that the ranges can tip over if the user places something heavy on an open oven door, GE Appliances noted in the recall announcement. Not only does this pose a tip-over risk, but it also poses a burn risk if hot food is involved. So far, no such incidents or injuries have been reported.

"As part of our commitment to product safety and loyalty to our consumers, we are voluntarily recalling affected units to provide a free in-home repair," GE Appliances said, adding that customers may still use the affected ranges, but shouldn't place anything on the oven door until the "anti-slip bracket has been inspected and repaired if necessary."

The recall affects quite a few models under seven brand names, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) noted. These are GE, GE Profile, Café, Haier, Hotpoint, Crosley and Conservator. They were manufactured from May to June 2021 and sold from May to July at various home improvement and home appliance stores including Lowe's, Best Buy and Home Depot.

The affected serial numbers are the ones that begin with HS or LS and end with P. A full list of the affected model numbers is available on the GE Appliances website. For instance, the Haier branded ranges affected are model numbers QAS740, QGAS740 and QSS740, while the affected Conservator models are VBS160 and VGBS100.

"Depending on your model, the model and serial numbers can be found on a label visible on each unit," GE Appliances explained. "Depending on the model, this label is on the left-hand side or top right when the oven door is opened, or on the left-hand side when the bottom drawer is opened."

CPSC clarified that consumers should not bring the recalled ranges to where they were purchased. Instead, they should contact GE Appliances to see if their range is affected by the recall. They can input the model number and serial number on the company's website to check if it is part of the recall, or perhaps call the recall hotline at 1-877-247-9770 with the model and serial numbers already on hand.

"The Company is offering a free in-home service call to inspect the recalled range's anti-tip bracket, and ensure it is securely installed to the floor or wall," GE Appliances noted.

In total, 132,000 units are affected by the recall. Some 12,960 were also sold in Canada.
