The Federal Trade Commission has some bad news for the 150,000 smartphone users who purchased apps promising to alleviate acne: they don't work.

AcnePwner and AcneApp prompted the FTC to bring its first complaint addressing health claims made by mobile apps. Ads for AcnePwner, which sold for 99 cents on Android Marketplace promised it would Kill ACNE with this simple, yet powerful tool! AcneApp, which sold for $1.99 on iTunes, promised to do away with pimples by using red and blue lights.

Smartphones make our lives easier in countless ways, but unfortunately when it comes to curing acne, there's no app for that, FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz said in a news release.

Marketers of the discredited apps agreed to stop making baseless claims as a result of the complaint.
