KEY POINTS

  • "Battlefield 4" is experiencing a resurgence in player interest
  • Servers across all regions are exceeding maximum capacity during peak hours
  •  Server population is expected to remain steady until "Batllefield 2042" releases

The hype for “Battlefield 2042’s” return to the modern (albeit somewhat futuristic) era has riled up fans of “Battlefield 4” across the globe, causing many of the game’s once-dead servers to return to life with way too many players to handle.

“Battlefield 4” gained a large spike in player interest after the reveal of “Battlefield 2042” during E3 2021 back in June. Players rushed back to the online modern military shooter, causing Electronic Arts to provide more servers for the U.S. West region in order to deal with the sudden demand. However, a quick look at Battlelog’s server browser during peak hours showed that the rest of the game’s regions are enjoying a similar boom in interest.

Servers across the U.S., Europe and Asia were packed with players who were trying to get into a match, and many of them were stuck in long 20-player queues that often gave new server guests no choice but to play on the losing team.

“Battlefield 4” saw a significant jump in its PC player counts on Steamcharts. The game’s average player count spiked from 1,514 in May to 6,458 in the past 30 days, with the peak player count jumping from 3,408 to a staggering 11,714. This does not include the players who are running the game via Origin or players on consoles.

Stat-tracking website BF4DB counts all of the active players and servers in the game, resulting in significantly higher population numbers than the Steam-exclusive websites. As of writing, “Battlefield 4” currently has over 11,000 concurrent players across all regions, according to BF4DB, with roughly 7,000 U.S.-based players contributing to the census.

Reaching this amount of players is an impressive feat for a 7-year-old online FPS. Both of the game’s successors are also enjoying very healthy player counts, with “BF1” reaching a peak of 15,864 in the past 30 days while “BFV” reached over 30,000.

New and old players alike are currently hopping on to the many official and custom servers of “Battlefield 4.” Considering the game’s emphasis longevity and replayability, it’s expected that the game will experience steady streams of frequent players until the eventual release of “Battlefield 2042” later this year.
