“Star Wars: Battlefront 2” was officially announced this past weekend during the annual Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, and EA has confirmed it won’t have a DLC Season Pass.

“We don’t have a season pass,” creative director Bernd Diemer told Mashable. This has led to speculations that EA and developer DICE might simply scrap the season pass model and go back to the more selling map packs individually.

However, Diemer also suggested that they might actually be doing something different entirely. “I cannot talk about the specifics of this, but we have something different in mind that will allow you to play longer, be [more] invested in the game without having a fragmented community,” he explained.

The creative director also shared the decision to ditch the DLC season pass was difficult, but admitted it wasn’t the best thing for the franchise. It basically fragmented the “Battlefront” community apart and Diemer said that they “definitely want to avoid that” by coming up with "something better."

One of the biggest complaints about 2015’s “Battlefront” was it felt like an incomplete game. It lacked a campaign and users would have to pay $15 for one new map pack. It’s clear that “Battlefront 2” has resolved the single-player issue, but the game’s DLCs is what’s making most player a bit nervous.

There are several possibilities on what “something different” EA and DICE are working on. It’s possible that “Star Wars: Battlefront 2” might simply cost more, DLCs might be released individually for $5 to $15 or EA might be setting up a new subscription-based system, as speculated by Forbes.

A subscription-based offering might mean that the game will cost less, but users would have to pay around $10 a month to have access to all of “Battlefront 2’s” contents. This would be something really new and different for the franchise and for the first-person shooter genre.

One possible option that fans would certainly want would be if “Battlefront 2” would simply follow in “Titanfall 2’s” footsteps. “Titanfall 2” featured free DLCs, while players would only have to cough up cash for cosmetic customizations. Although this might really be great for players, EA might miss out on bigger DLC revenues that the “Star Wars” brand can surely net.

“Star Wars: Battlefront 2” is set o be released on Nov. 17, 2017 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
