KEY POINTS

  • "Bayonetta" voice actress Hellena Taylor claims to have been low-balled by Platinum Games
  • She revealed she was offered several thousand dollars more than what she initially claimed
  • "Bayonetta's" lead character will now be voiced by Jennifer Hale

The controversy surrounding "Bayonetta" voice actress Hellena Taylor has reached a tipping point after a recent string of her own tweets revealed she omitted important details regarding a pay dispute that she started.

On Oct. 15, Taylor released a video via Twitter in which she claimed Platinum Games offered her only $4,000 to reprise her role as the character Bayonetta in the upcoming third game in the series. The voice actress called on fans to boycott "Bayonetta 3" over Platinum Games' "immoral" compensation package.

Taylor's statement riled video games everywhere as the issue compiled itself onto the larger problem regarding the voice acting industry in general. People were in support of the voice actress until Bloomberg investigative journalist Jason Schreier reported that Taylor was actually offered up to $4,000 per recording session, and not just for the whole job.

Anonymous sources also claimed to Schreier that Taylor asked for a six-figure sum on top of residuals, but Platinum Games declined. Later, the role of Bayonetta was given to renowned voice actress Jennifer Hale.

On Monday, Taylor took to Twitter again. In a thread, she said that she needed to "defend myself and my reputation in the industry."

People quickly pointed out that she contradicted the facts she laid out in her original statement. In the new thread, Taylor said that Platinum Games' first offer amounted to $10,000, which is significantly larger than the $4,000 she originally stated.

On top of the $10,000 offer, Taylor said she contacted Japanese director Hideki Kamiya to raise the issue about her pay and request the amount she believed she was worth.

She claimed that Kamiya offered to increase her pay by an additional $5,000 to bump her total up to $15,000. Still, she declined the offer and refused the role completely.

After 11 months of silence since Taylor contacted Platinum, she claimed that the developers reached out to her and offered her a flat rate of $4,000 to record cameo voice lines as a guest, but she also refused.

Additionally, Taylor took a swing at the Bloomberg report, saying that the offer for her to be paid $4,000 over five recording sessions was merely fabricated.

Video game fans have begun to call Taylor out for her omissions as well as her claim that the "Bayonetta" series is worth $450 million.
