  • Bella Hadid marched with thousands in Brooklyn Saturday to support Palestinians in Gaza
  • The model was blasted by Israel, which claimed her move amounts to calling for the "elimination of the Jewish state"
  • Some Twitter users defended Hadid, while others sided with Israel

Bella Hadid received criticism from the state of Israel Sunday after joining a pro-Palestinian march in Brooklyn over the weekend, but Twitter users have her back.

On Saturday, the 24-year-old supermodel, whose father Mohamed Hadid is Palestinian, was seen marching with thousands in Bay Ridge to support Palestinians in Gaza amid a week of deadly back-and-forth attacks between Israel and Hamas.

Israel's official Twitter account blasted Hadid, posting, "When celebrities like @BellaHadid advocate for throwing Jews into the sea, they are advocating for the elimination of the Jewish State. This shouldn't be an Israeli-Palestinian issue. This should be a human issue. Shame on you." It included a screenshot of Hadid streaming to Instagram Live from the protest wearing a traditional dress, a Keffiyeh and a face mask.

Many Twitter users immediately came to Hadid's defense, saying the state's accusations were not true. Israel replied in another tweet that it can be heard on "second 22," but the netizens said they couldn't find it.

"Do you need a cotton bud? The chanting is ‘FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA, PALESTINE WILL BE FREE’ lmao shame on YOU," one commented.

"im hard of hearing and have audio processing disorder and could still clearly tell she’s saying 'from the river to the sea palestine will be free' lmao. just more propaganda from this settler colony trying to justify their genocide of Palestinians," a second netizen added.

"pls the *official* state of israel account on twitter is having a public cry over super model bella hadid asserting her palestinianness and freedom for her people....... an L if I ever saw one," another wrote.

"Not Is*ael tweeting that Bella Hadid said Jews should be thrown into the sea the chant is literally 'From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.' They are DESPERATE," another user tweeted.

However, some sided with Israel, with one person tweeting, "I read through the thread. So many people with so many opinions with so little clue. Palestinians/Hamas want one thing, to end Israel. I support Israel. Maybe we should normalize Support Israel."

"Which implies getting rid of the entire state of Israel.... The tweet is correct," @JustForFollows2 wrote in response to comments regarding what Hadid was chanting in the clip. "I do too, but from the river to the sea implies a one state solution with no Israel," the netizen added.

"I support Israel because, among other reasons, they are as legitimate as any other country, they are being attacked by another country, I have relatives there and I am a Jew. Being a Jew you should be ashamed; but I'm sure you've heard that before," a fourth netizen commented.

Hadid also shared a since-deleted video on social media Saturday in which she got emotional as she spoke about the "deep sense of pain" she felt for Palestinians.

"I feel a deep sense of pain for Palestine and for my Palestinian brothers and sisters today and everyday. Watching these videos physically breaks my heart into 100 different pieces," Hadid said in the video obtained by Daily Mail. "You cannot allow yourself to be desensitized to watching human life being taken. You just can’t. Palestinian lives are the lives that will help change the world. And they are being taken from us by the second. #FreePalestine."

Hadid's older sister, Gigi, has also been posting pro-Palestinian commentary on social media, along with other stars such as Rihanna and Susan Sarandon.
