The unofficial end of summer is quickly approaching, which means it may be the last chance to enjoy some fun in the sun before the cooler fall temperatures arrive.

Luckily, there are plenty of places across the nation that are perfect for a quick getaway.

Check out these five great places to stay in the U.S. over Labor Day weekend.

1. Sonoma County, Calif.

Heading to the West Coast to unwind and say an early goodbye to summer can be a great way to spend the long weekend. Sonoma County, known for its beautiful vineyards, is just 30 miles north of San Francisco. The proximity means visitors can stay in the city to enjoy the nightlife after spending their days visiting renowned wineries.

2. Wilmington, Del.

The perfect family vacation lies just along the Christina and Delaware rivers in Wilmington. Gather the kids and head to the Delaware Children's Museum, where various play areas and hands-on activities will surely entertain them. Don't forget to take some time to check out the Delaware Art Museum and the local art galleries in town before doing a bit of window shopping at the boutiques. For some fun outdoors, consider hiking some of the scenic views along the trails in the Brandywine Valley.

3. Destin, Fla.

Head to the white sandy beaches in the northwest Florida city, where you can enjoy fun in the sun on both land and sea. Take a stroll on the HarborWalk Village Boardwalk or grab the kids to hit up the water park or one of the many mini-golf courses. If you prefer being on the water, there are plenty of ways to book excursions whether it's fishing, a dinner cruise, or other activities at sea.

4. Wisconsin Dells

Some of the most thrilling waterparks in the world can be found in the Badger State. Although the temperatures around Labor Day in September can be unpredictable, Wisconsin Dells has plenty of indoor waterparks like Great Wolf Lodge or Chula Vista Resort. For those who prefer to explore other areas in the city, there are several horse trails, recreational activities, shopping, and other attractions.

5. Silverthorne, Colo.

Although the picturesque town in the Colorado Rocky Mountains is known for its countless ski resorts, there are many outdoor adventures to explore during a Labor Day getaway. Silverthorne offers an array of hiking and biking trails as well as fun on the water. Head to the Dillon Reservoir where you can rent a sailboat, pontoon, or paddleboard for some fun in the sun.
